GA´THEAE

GA´THEAE (Γαθεαί: Eth. Γαθεάτης), a town of Arcadia in the district Cromitis, situated upon the river Gatheatas (Γαθεάτας), which rose near the place, and which, after receiving the Carnion (Καπνίων), rising in the territory of Aegys, flowed into the Alpheius. Gatheae is placed by the best modern authorities at Kyrádhes. (Paus. 8.34. § § 5, 6; Steph. B. sub voce Boblaye, Recherches, &c. p. 169; Leake, Peloponnesiaca, p. 234; Curtius, Peloponnesos, vol. i. pp. 291, 336.)
