TABASSI

Eth. TABASSI (Eth. Τάβασσοι, Ptol. 7.1.65), a tribe of Indians who ocupied the interior of the southern part of Hindostân, in the neighbourhood of the present province of Mysore. Their exact position cannot be determined, but they were not far distant from M. Bettigo, the most S. of the W. Ghâts. They derived their name from the Sanscrit Tapasja, “woods.” (Lassen, Ind. Alterth. vol. i. p. 243.)
