The metre is alternately Phalacean hendecasyllable and Archilochian, the system of the latter being -W -W -W -W = -u-u -- i. e. four dactyls or equivalents in first half, then an ithyphallic.

Θραΐσσα cf. Herond. i. 1 Θρέισσα ἀράσσει τὴν θύρην τις: Theocr. ii. 70.

[2] ὁδῷ the last syllable of the first half of the line may be long instead of short.

[3] γυνὰ ἀντί synizesis.

ἀντὶ τήνων ὧν ἔθρεψε = ἀντὶ τήνων ἔθρεψε, or in ordinary idiom ἀνθ᾽ ὧν ἔθρεψε, 'in return for her nursing.'
