The vowel thus shortened (cf. § 30) may be written short, giving rise to two spellings of the same word (cf. § 29). E. g. “μέν, μήν” (and “μα?ν”). Similarly “ἀτάρ” and “αὐτάρ”. δέ used as a continuative ‘then’—including ““δέ” in apodosis”—is equivalent in force to a weakened “δή”. Whether the two words are really identical in origin, however, is disputed.
