δεικνύειν (more commonly δεικνύναι), to “point to,” not, of course, to “display.” ὄντων ἐπὶ τοῖς πράγμασιν, “devoting yourselves to action.” ἃν ἀπῇ. A general supposition in present time: the apodosis of such conditions is always in present (or gnomic aorist) indicative. τὰ πράγματα. A better antithesis would be τὰ ἔργα (given by one good MS.). ἑτοιμότατα. We should expect the comparative. αὐτῷ, i.e. speechifying, in which the Athenians were proficient beyond all others. δοκοῦμεν, “are reputed.”
