Peace policy.
--The Diocesan Convention of the State of
New Hampshire,
Bishop Chase (uncle of the
Secretary of the United States Treasury) presiding, refused by an all but unanimous vote (only two clergymen in the affirmative) to pass war resolutions, proposed by
the Rev. Dr. Burroughs.
The Rev. Mr. Elmes spoke eloquently and well against action on the subject, and his views were evidently those of the body of the clergy.
The
New Hampshire Patriot has the following in relation to this subject:
‘
In the Episcopal Convention for
Rhode Island, where the ‘"war fever"’ rages most fiercely, no proposition was made for any action upon the war question.
We learn that the same is true of the Vermont Convention.--Yet we hear not a word of complaint from the papers of those States because no action was taken.
Why, then, is the
Convention of this State so ruthlessly assaulted for a course which is not deemed censurable elsewhere?--It is simply because political and religious bigotry and hate rule the minds of the
Republican leaders here, and they have become blind to sense and decency in regard to matters of this kind.
