The English Legions in Italy.

The English press have made themselves merry over the discomfiture of the Irish legion who went to Italy to fight the battles of the Pope. But the English legion, which enlisted on the other side, have made themselves a hundred-fold more odious and ridiculous. The Irish left Italy, at any rate, with the gratitude and respect of their own party, whereas the English have behaved so outrageously that a bloody fight has occurred between them and their own friends. There never was a nation which had a greater facility of kicking itself out of the good opinions of all mankind.
