[written for the Richmond Dispatch.]
after the battle of Manassas.

We have broken the chain that once bound
We are free! We are free! We are free!
As the wind on the mountains around us,
As a wave of the blue rolling sea,
Let Virginians remember the glory,
Of the fields where their freedom they've won,
And Virginia resplendent in story
Shall as the twin of the sun!

From our the foul fee we are sweeping,
Far away! far away! far away!
From the where those heroes lie sleeping
for their country to-day
Our triumph now flying
are the boast of the free
And our tears are still shouting, the dying,
"Virginia! Virginia! to thee"

But away with the tear-drop of sorrow,
soldiers, so brave and so dear,
Have the bright dawning to-morrow
the Goddess of Liberty's car.
w of there mountains of glory
of the field we have won,
Virginia resplendent in story,
Shall as the twin of the sun!
