The horse-stealing case.
--
R. C. Phelps and
R. C. Smoot alias
George Rigley, charged with stealing a horse from some person whose name has not yet been ascertained, were brought into the
Mayor's Coust yesterday for further examination.
A young man from the country, who appeared as a witness for the
Commonwealth, said that the stolen horse was now in the town of
Scottsville, and the
Mayor decided to send the prisoners to that place for trial when
Mr. Purvis, another witness, came in, and said that circumstances rendered it quite probable that two horses had been stolen instead of one, and that the larceny was committed in
Lynchburg.
Upon this information, the
Mayor determined to send the prisoners to the latter place.
Mr. Purvis gave
Phelps a character not very flattering to that individual's vanity.
