Fast day.

Friday, the day of fast appointed by the President, was universally observed in this city. The stores and shops were closed, all kinds of business suspended, and the streets and avenues were as quiet as on Sunday.--The places of public worship were generally well filled, and on every side one saw decided evidences of respect for the day of public thanksgiving and prayer.
