Saturday.
--A large number of our citizens took occasion on Saturday to pay a visit to our river defences, many of them taking provisions and arming themselves with trusty rifles, designing to offer their services as sharp shooters, in which capacity a number are daily employed.
A number of reports were put in circulation relative to the movements of the enemy — appearance of gunboats, &c., below the defences; but being traced out were found to be without foundation.
There was less excitement than usual relative to the all-absorbing topic that engages the attention of everybody.
The streets presented a mass of busy life — men, women, children, officers, soldiers, horses, drays, carts, wagons, carriages, &c., were moving continuously from early dawn to the close of day. A stranger would not have judged the enemy to be at our doors, or, in fact, anywhere near.
