Hustings Court.
--This Court met at 10 o'clock yesterday,
Recorder Caskie presiding, and disposed of the following business:
John and
Julia Pitman, free negroes, were tried for violently assaulting and beating
Ellen Kenan, a white woman.
John was acquitted, but
Julia was found guilty and ordered to be punished by stripes.
Wm. Jones and
George H. Willie, free negroes, for robbing Mat, a slave, of a watch, were found guilty, and ordered to be sold into slavery for life.
John W. Sartin and Gileon B
Thompson, charged with garroting and robbing
William Rowe of $40, were tried and acquitted.
James Smith,
Michael Holland,
Patrick Livingston,
Wm. Baker,
Wm. Brown, and
George Brown, sent on by the
Mayor for garroting
Philip L. Gregory, and robbing him of $87 and a
silver watch, were examined.--
Smith,
Holland, and
Livingston, were sent on to answer for felony at the next criminal term of
Judge Lyons's Court.
The other three were discharged.
Chas. C. Pedrick was arraigned to answer the charge of feloniously stabbing and killing
John Mossering, but before the witnesses for the
Commonwealth concluded their evidence the
Court took a recess till 4½ o'clock.
