Public Hacks are few in number and generally inferior in appearance, but the drivers of them, catching the spirit of the times, seem to have learned the art of charging to perfection. We heard a gentleman complaining yesterday that he had to pay $10 for riding ten squares; and another, that he was charged $50 for the use of a back one afternoon. --The increased prices of horse-feed and negro hire is an excuse for raising their charges, but the figures quoted above are rather too severe even for these times.
