Permission to join the Navy.
--Bill Flat
alias Chicago Bill, who has heretofore enjoyed some little reputation as a prize-fighter, made his appearance before the
Mayor yesterday as a petitioner for permission to join the C. S. Navy.
Bill, it appears, has been in the city jail for the past ten or twelve weeks on some charge involving his character as a peaceable citizen.
Tiring of his prison life, and thinking he could be more needful to his family and country by doing so than continuing his sojourn there, he appealed to the
Mayor to permit him to join the navy; that he could there make an honest living for himself and family, and would in future keep out of any difficulty which would again subject him to imprisonment.
The
Mayor granted his request upon the condition that some responsible person would guarantee that he will stick to his bargain and remain in the navy.
