The South Starved out.

--In the little city of Petersburg the friends of the 12th and 41st Virginia regiments have been making them a Christmas present. Four wagon loads have started for camp and 136 boxes have been shipped by railroad. The Express gives some of the contents:

There were not less than four hundred turkeys; an equal number of fowls of other kinds; luscious hams, boiled and baked; opossums, squirrels, partridges, venison, and other game; tender

loin beef; spare ribs; chines; fresh pork; sweet potatoes, celery, and other vegetables; eggs and fresh butter; pound cake and all the other cakes incident to the Christmas season; oranges, lemons, and apples; preserves, candies, and nuts; cigars and wines; whiskey, brandy, and rum, and other concomitants of the joyous Christmas howl; and probably many other things, which escaped our attention. The meats were generally cooked, and everything was put up in the safest manner for transportation.

Nor were the poorer members of the regiment forgotten. Large boxes were contributed for their use by the citizens generally, and addressed to no particular person. One lady, we hear, with a liberality which is truly commendable, prepared a box of refreshments which cost her $1,000. This was presented to the 12th Virginia regiment.
