Giving in false returns.

--Commissioner Sands continued his examination yesterday of parties for rendering false returns to the Assessor of the C. S. War Tax. Peter Lawson, a butcher in the Second Market, was put upon trial, and after a hearing of the evidence against him, he was remanded for indictment, and admitted to bail in the sum of $1,000 for his appearance on the 10th day of February next. This makes the fourth butcher from the Second Market who has been arraigned before the Commissioner for attempting to deceive the Government Assessor in the collection of the war tax.
