A forged account on the Government.
--The charge preferred against
Robert E. Placide and
Robert Lurly, of having forged certain papers for the purpose of defrauding the
Government, which led to the arrest and commitment of the parties to Castle Thunder on Thursday last, having been an offence which is alone cognizable in the civil courts, the accused were yesterday placed in the custody of the
Marshal of the
Confederate States District Court, to be held by him until an investigation of the matter is had before
C. S. Commissioner Sands, which will probably take place on Monday next.
Placide presented an account of $800 for a horse killed at the
battle of Waterloo, which was necessarily abandoned and left in the hands of the enemy.
The valuation of the horse was attached to the account, and signed by "
Frank Bond,
Captain;
W. H. Dorsey, Lieut;
Milton Welsh,
Lieut." the signatures of which were forged.
Lurty certified to the correctness of these signatures, which constitutes his connection with
Wm. J. Lemmon, who presented a similar account at the same time, and under the same circumstances as those in the case of
Placide, who is a private in co. D, 1st Maryland Line.
His case was similarly disposed of.
