Recorder's Court.
--In the absence of the
Mayor yesterday morning,
Recorder James K. Caskie disposed of the cases which came up for consideration:
Demetrius Carrington, a free negro, arrested on Thursday night with four bottles of whiskey, one shirt, one coat, and one bag, supposed to have been stolen, was, after a hearing of the evidence, ordered to receive thirty-nine lashes.
James Williams, a Yankee deserter, was remanded for indictment by the
Grand Jury of the Hustings Court, on the charge of stealing one pistol, worth $75, and one hat, valued at $75, from
Wm. W. Johnston.
James, slave of
Henry Smith, charged with stealing one axe, two aprons, and two pairs of stockings from
Lucy T. Torrm, was ordered to receive twenty-five lashes, well laid on.
The charge against
Wilson, slave of
Caroline Carter, of stealing a quantity of sugar and other articles from
James Lyons, was, in consequence of its originally having been before the
Mayor, put off till this morning.
Charles Isaacs and
Richard Barny, charged with garroting and robbing
Augustus Haxall on Wednesday night last, was taken up; but, on account of the absence of important witnesses, the case was put off for a future hearing.
Henry, slave of
Samuel Redd, and Tom, and
Patrick, slaves of
Buck Davidson, charged with assaulting
B. F. Grant and robbing him of an overcoat, a breastpin, and $20 in money, were called; but the
Recorder, being Indisposed to take up any case which had previously been before the
Mayor, put off the examination till this morning.
C. J. Brown and
Charley White, charged with turning on the gas at Metropolitan Hall after it had been turned off by order of the
Inspector of Gas, were fined $5. In this case the evidence proved that the gas had been turned off through the instrumentality of
Lee Mallory, the former lessee; that the building, since the 22d of February, instant, has been under the sole management of
Messrs. Brown &
White, who had, in every sense of the word, complied with the terms of their contract; but that the officers in charge of the gas department had not been apprised of the true state of the case.
The
Recorder took the ground that as the gas had been turned off by direction of the inspector, an offence had been committed in turning it on without his consent, although he frankly confessed that the order for shutting it off from Metropolitan Hall should not have been given.
The charge preferred against
Edwin Wilson, of selling liquor without a license, was not fully sustained by the evidence, and he was therefore discharged.
The evidence against Joe, slave of
Maria Bullington, charged with stealing a lot of sugar from
R. H. Dibrell's storehouse on Wednesday night last, not being of such a character as to connect him with the theft, he was discharged.
Jesse, slave of
Baldwin & Co., arrested for being out after hours without a pass, was ordered to receive ten lashes.
Ben, slave of
Robert Gilliam, charged with the same offence, was discharged.
