Lightning and New milk.

--During the heavy thunder storm on Wednesday afternoon the residence of Secretary Mallory, on 10th street, was struck by lightning, the fluid tearing away a portion of the brick cornice, shattering a window frame and sash, and entering and setting fire to the small room in the northeast corner. Dense smoke instantly issued from it, and to all appearance the fire was beyond control, when a young son of Mr. Mallory rushed into the room and succeeded in extinguishing it. His demands upon the terror-stricken servants for water were answered by screams of murder, and by yelling that water would not put out God's fire, and that nothing but new milk would do any good; and but for his presence of mind and persistent energy the building would have been destroyed.
