Serious Accident.

--A negro man whose name we could not learn, employed at Howell and Messier's boat yard, on the canal, a short distance beyond the Armory bridge, was struck in his back by one of the levers to a windlass a few days since, and so severely injured as to make it doubtful whether he can recover. Himself and one other man were engaged in hoisting a piece of timber, when the rope broke and the windlass whirled back with great force, one of the extended bars hitting him just below the spine, breaking his back bone and knocking him a distance of several feet. The opinion of the physician attending him is that he will die.
