Mayor's Court, yesterday.
--
Freeman Powell, the young man who cut and stabbed
Patrick O'Donnell on last Sunday week, on the south side of the Basin, from the effects of which
O'Donnell died on last Saturday, was brought into court for an examination; but the
Mayor having had placed in his hands the evidence and verdict of the
Coroner's inquest, no examination was gone into, and
Powell was remanded for the Hustings Court, which sets on the second Monday in April next, and the witnesses recognized for their appearance at that time.
Thomas, slave of
Gates Thompson, was charged with stealing two ladies' dresses, and other articles to the value of one thousand dollars, belonging to
William Valentine.
The evidence was not conclusive enough, and His Honor thought
Mr. Valentine should be present to testify; therefore he continued the case until to-day.
George Finnegan and
Spartan Webb were charged with having in their possession a bag of meal, supposed stolen from some person unknown.
The parties were committed until a third party, said to be the really guilty party, can be arrested.
John Reardon was summoned to answer the charge of permitting his wife,
Hannah, to trade with a slave without the written consent of her owner.
The case was held under
curia.
George, slave of
John Holstead, charged with the theft of a pair of shoes of the value of one hundred dollars, was ordered thirty-nine lashes.
The remaining cases were without interest.
