The "Fenian Brotherhood" in the United States.
--The Fenian Society of the
United States, which has been keeping quiet for some time, has come to life again.
It is holding anniversaries of something or other all over the
North, and passing resolutions.
At one of these mass meetings, held in
Philadelphia last week, the following resolutions, explanatory of their "sentiments," were adopted:
‘
"Resolved, That we call on our countrymen, of every class and creed, wherever they may be scattered, to pause amidst the busy scenes of life and consider the cruel and grinding oppression of
England, that has for its tendency the total destruction of the Irish race, while her laws bear the impress of cowardice in prohibiting the use of arms among the people lest justice should have her own — arms and organization alone being the only remedy to rescuer the national life from this awful and impending danger.
’
"Resolved, That, in the name of
Ireland, and for her holy cause, we, on this sacred festival, forgive from our hearts all the slanders that have been cast upon us by ill-timed haste or mistaken zeal, whether religiously, politically or personally; we have no enemies but the enemies of Irish liberty.
We cheerfully accord to all men the right to differ with us in opinion, but in doing so we intend to maintain our own.
"Resolved, That we pledge ourselves to sustain the laws enacted, and resolutions-passed by the late Irish Congress assembled in
Cincinnati, representing, as it did, the interests, feelings and national sentiments of the Irish people, and proven, by its numbers, energy, patriotic devotion and legislative ability, fully competent to shape the destinies of the Irish nation if the people are true to themselves.
"Resolved, That we remember with love and gratitude the protection we have received beneath the
American flag, that shielded us from the grasp of the oppressor; while doing so, we cannot forget that we have contributed, by our energy and industry, to the material wealth of the nation; while, on every battle-field of
America, Irish bravery has added to the glory of the
American name."
