Commander of cavalry in the Valley.

Major-General Lunsford L. Lomax, who now commands the cavalry in the Valley, succeeds General Ransom. He is a young and very excellent officer, and is doing much to improve that part of his command which needs improvement. He was a second lieutenant of cavalry in the old United States army, and is a son of Major M. Page Lomax, deceased, also an old United States officer.
