Campbell, Cleveland J. 1836- Military officer: born in New York City in July, 1836; graduated at the University of Gottingen; enlisted in the 44th New York Regiment early in the Civil War; and was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers March 13, 1865. During the engagement of Petersburg he was colonel of the 23d Regiment of colored troops, and while leading his command into the thickest of this fight the famous mine exploded, killing and wounding nearly 400 of his troops. He also received injuries which caused his death in Castleton, N. Y., June 13, 1865.

Doty, James Duane, 1799-1865 Governor; born in Salem, N. Y., in 1799; studied law and settled in Detroit; member of the Michigan legislature in 1834, and there introduced the bill which provided for the division of Michigan and the establishment of the Territories of Iowa and Wisconsin. He aided in founding Madison, Wis., which city was made the capital of the State through his efforts. He held a seat in Congress in 1836-41 and 1849-53; governor of Wisconsin in 1841-44; and was appointed governor of Utah in 1864. He died in Salt Lake City, Ut., June 13, 1865.

The northern portion of the State was the theatre of military operations in 1862, but the most important ones were in 1863, in movements connected with the siege and capture of Vicksburg (q. v.).
