n fields across the low ground, past Dr. Thomas Grimball's house on to the Wappoo. The low ground crossed by both these roads over causeways formed the front of Terry's lines, and was commanded by our naval vessels. Fort Pemberton, on the Stono, constituted the enemy's right. Thence the line was retired partially behind James Island Creek, consisting of detached light works for field-guns and infantry. Their left was the fortified camp of Secessionville, where, before Battery Lamar, General Benham was repulsed in the spring of 1862. General Beauregard, the Confederate Department commander, considered an attack on Charleston by way of James Island as the most dangerous to its safety. He posted his forces accordingly, and on July 10 had 2,926 effectives there, with 927 on Morris Island, 1,158 on Sullivan's Island, and 850 in the city. Few troops from other points were spared when Morris Island was attacked on the 10th; therefore Terry's diversion had been effective. Had Beaure

September 10th, by General Rosecrans, who had under his command nine regiments, eight of which participated in the battle. The odds were at the least estimate three to one. The Federal brigade which made the first attack was commanded by Gen. H. W. Benham, the same officer who, as a captain, was in charge of the vigorous pursuit of General Garnett to Carrick's ford. His command suffered heavily from an effective fire of musketry and artillery, which greeted its first appearance before the w the Federals being reinforced, renewed the advance, and after vigorous skirmishes, Floyd abandoned the front of the mountain and moved his camp to the rear. On the 12th, General Schenck crossed with his brigade and occupied Cotton hill, and General Benham moved from Loop creek to attack Floyd in the rear. But the latter evaded the trap prepared for him, and fell back upon Loop mountain, with little loss, except that Lieut.-Col. St. George Croghan, one of the most gallant officers in the servi

General H. W. Benham had been in command and General Horatio G. Wright second in rank. Our whole force on the island never, at any time, amounted to more than one-half of the land force of the enemy. If this large force had, on the 16th of June, been broughered our forces that it would have hardly been possible to resist the onslaught of such troops as we met. They were adversaries worthy of our steel. Their gallant impetuosity was not sufficient, however, to compensate for the mistake made by General Benham in hurling his best regiments against the strongest part of our works. Our disasters in Virginia — Wilson and Company Responsible. From the New York Herald.] The sentiments expressed by Senator Wilson, in his speech in the Senate on the 28th of last March, in reference to stopping enlistments and reducing the army, were also the views of Wade, Sumner, and Chandler. It is likewise clearly shown, by the speech of Mr. Wilson, that all our disasters in Virginia were brought about through the intercession and influence of this band of radicals at the War Department, with Wilson at their head. Says Wilson, "I have over and over again been to the War Office, and urged upon the Department to stop recruiting in ev
