erkins than would have been any priestly or military splendor. The services were performed by Rev. John C. Smith of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Washington, who thus describes the scene:β€”-- There were but four of us,β€”the father, Dr. Francis H. Brown, Surgeon of Judiciary Square Hospital, and a young ministerial friend, Mr. D. R. Frazier, from the Union Theological Seminary, New York. As we were about to leave the Superintendent's house, I beckoned to three wounded convalescents near he usual military sign. is guardian: When he was told, a few hours before his death, that he could not live, he received it without a fear, and looked on death calmly as his spirit went out, even after he had ceased to move a muscle, being still conscious, seemingly to the last breath. Being with the Army of the Tennessee all the time, I have had but little opportunity to learn what was going on at the East, and particularly in Cambridge. I shall be glad to get any information with regard to my Alma Mater and the doings of her sons, especially in the war, and shall be happ

. The Editor has also been much indebted to the successive pamphlet reports of the Classes of 854, 1855, 1856, 1858, and 1861, and to the personal exertions of the Class Secretaries from 1852 to 1864 inclusive. Especial thanks are due to Francis H. Brown, M. D., of the Class of 1857, Editor of the official Roll of Harvard Students who served in the Army or Navy of the United States during the War of the Rebellion. Dr. Brown has devoted much time to the preparation of a Biographical DictionaDr. Brown has devoted much time to the preparation of a Biographical Dictionary of all such students, living and deceased; a work which, it is to be hoped, may yet be published. The manuscript, so far as prepared, he has generously allowed me to consult. The Editor would gladly have also embraced in these volumes, had it been practicable, the memoirs of certain graduates who died during the war, and who were as truly enlisted in their country's service as any here recorded, though they wore no uniform and were mustered on no official rolls. The list might well hav
