Writing on November 23d, 1888, General Early adds: A considerable number of my men had broken down on the march, from exhaustion and want of shoes, and on my return to the Valley I found some 1800 or 2000 collected at Winchester by Colonel Goodwin, and others who had been temporarily disabled in tlhe campaign from the Wilderness to Richmond also returned. editors.
