Affairs on the Rapidan — the enemy Retiring towards Fredericksburg. The reports which we have from the line of the Rapidan, if correct, lessen the probabilities of an immediate general engagement. Meade is represented to be withdrawing the main body of his force from the position taken up on Mine Run, and to be moving in the direction of Fredericksburg — whether to go into winter quarters at that point, or to push his advance on Richmond, can only be conjectured. Our cavalry is not inactive, and maintains its reputation for alertness. From a dispatch received by a gentleman in this city yesterday, we learn that General Rosser's brigade made an attack on Sunday upon the camp of the Federal cavalry division of Gen. Gregg and succeeded in routing the enemy and capturing the camp. A large number of the enemy were killed and wounded, and one hundred and ten prisoners taken. The Siege of Charleston. Charleston, Dec. 1. --The enemy fired sixteen shells this afternoon into the city.--Several buildings were struck, and one white woman severely wounded. The shelling of the city brought on a lively artillery duel between Gregg and our batteries on James Island. No firing on Sullivan's Island.--Eight mortar shells were fired on Sumter to-day, and two last night, of which six missed. Nothing else of Interest. [Second Dispatch.] Charleston, Dec. 9. --The Yankees opened fire on the city this afternoon, and threw six shells. A concentrated fire from our batteries on James Island was brought to bear upon them, when they ceased. No damage.
