then threatened to thrust a knife into her if she questioned the children any more, and Mrs. Demelman hastily retreated. An Italian, who keeps the toy shop alluded to, testified that the Lillis children exchanged two one-dollar notes with him, and nothing else; but Mrs. Demelman's daughter deposed, on the other band, that she saw a ten-dollar note, besides a roll of other notes, in their possession at the same time. The Italian produced the paper which he said he exchanged, and Mrs. D. at once identified one of the notes as her own property, which she had deposited, with others in her pocket-book. Officers Kelly and Blankinship searched Lillis's house and found a considerable sum of money in paper and specie, including a twenty-dollar Confederate Treasury note. There were two of those notes stolen from Mrs. Demelman, though she could not say that this was one of them. With a view to a more thorough investigation, the Mayor adjourned the case over until this morning.
tings Court. Michael Leary and John Hamilton, charged with fighting in Mrs. Canary's bar-room, presented a most dismal aspect as they stood before the Mayor. Leary, it was stated, behaved very badly during his incarceration at the watch-house, while Hamilton was as docile in all respects as a sucking dove. The consequence was that the former was sent to jail in default of security to keep the peace, and Hamilton, who wears the garb of a soldier, was discharged from custody. Lawrence H. Kelly, another gray jacket, who claimed to belong to the Fourth Louisiana Battalion, was arraigned for taking a dollar note from a lad named Henry W. Shaw, at Stecker's store, and striking Mrs. Stecker on the head with his musket. The prisoner had been drinking most copiously; but as one crime is no apology for another, the Mayor committed him to jail in default of $150 security to keep the peace.
