ers from twenty-two states, equally divided between the two sections—Delaware being classed as a Southern state. Among the yeas were all the Northern votes, except two from Indiana—being 20— and 14 Southern. The nays consisted of 2 from the North, and 8 from the South. In the House of Representatives, the vote was 134 yeas to 42 nays. Of the yeas, 95 were Northern, 39 Southern; of the nays, 5 Northern, and 37 Southern. Among the nays in the Senate were Messrs. James Barbour and James Pleasants of Virginia, Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina, John Gaillard and William Smith of South Carolina. In the House Philip P. Barbour, John Randolph, John Tyler, and William S. Archer of Virginia, Charles Pinckney of South Carolina (one of the authors of the Constitution), Thomas W. at a moment's warning, if desired. Lee met this by laying a similar bridge at Drury's Bluff. By the close of July, 1864, Grant was in a position to choose his method of warfare—whether by a direct assault, by the slower process of a regular siege, or by heavy operations on the flanks of the Confederates. The regular siege of Petersburg began in July. On June 25 operations were started for mining under the Confederate forts so as to blow them up. One of these was in charge of Lieutenant-Colonel Pleasants, who completed it on July 22. When the mine was ready Grant sent Hancock to assist Foster to flank the Confederates at Deep Bottom, and, pushing on to Chapin's Bluff, below Drury's Bluff, to menace Lee's line of communications across the river. It was done; and, to meet the seeming impending danger to Richmond, Lee withdrew five of his eight remaining divisions on the south side of the James, between the 27th and the 29th. Grant's opportunity for a grand assault now offered. T

Heroism of James Pleasants, of the Gcochland county cavalry. [Extract.] In Goochland county court 21st March, 1864. On motion of Walter D. Leake, Esq., the following preamble and resolutions offered by him were unanimously adopted by the court and ordered to be spread upon its minutes: Whereas, In the savage war sacred remembrance the deeds of heroism and bravery of the privates in the ranks, therefore— Resolved, That the cool bravery and patriotic ardor of Private James Pleasants, of the Goochland cavalry, in killing one of the enemy and capturing thirteen others and sixteen horses in the recent raid of Dahlgren in our county, wereits appreciation of genuine courage and unshrinking patriotism. Resolved, That a copy of these proceedings be transmitted by the clerk of this court to Private James Pleasants, of the Goochland cavalry, and also to the editors of the Richmond newspapers, with a request that they publish the same in their respective papers.
