town will pay to any inhabitant thereof, being a non-commissioned officer or private, who shall voluntarily engage in the service of the United States, the sum of five dollars per month in addition to the pay allowed by the Government, upon the production of a certificate from the aforesaid committee that he is an inhabitant, and of his said service, payable at such time as the committee shall deem proper. It was then voted that Henry W. Taft, Albert Langdon, William Deming, Jr., William D. Sedgwick, and Luther S. Butler be the aforesaid committee. An adjourned meeting was held on the 13th of May, at which the first resolution was amended by inserting $2,000 instead of $1,000. 1862. At a legal meeting held on the 3d of March, five hundred dollars were appropriated for the payment of State aid to the families of soldiers. On the 22d of July the town voted to pay a bounty of one hundred dollars to each of eighteen men who would volunteer for three years in the military service

rals Gorman, Burns, and Dana. Only the first two were with us, and these were commanded by General Sedgwick, to whom, after Stone's removal and incarceration, the division was assigned. We had also , numbered 38,484, -made up of Banks's division, 15,398; Lander's (Shields's) division, 11,869; Sedgwick's division, 11,217. Without guards, etc., its effective strength was 30,000. See McClellan's ning Report, March 2, 1862, Rebellion Record, vol. i. p. 546, supplement. Gorman's brigade of Sedgwick's division had been guarding the Potomac from Great Falls to the Monocacy, and was sent forwardeld, midway between Charlestown and Bunker Hill; General Shields halted at Martinsburg, and General Sedgwick at Charlestown. Our route was first south from Charlestown to Berryville, fourteen and otially, the brigade that fell to my command. From Winchester, on the fifteenth of March, General Sedgwick, with his division, was transferred to another corps in the Army of the Potomac. In the
enerals Halleck, Burnside, Reno, Parke, Cullom and Sedgwick have all made most earnest inquiries concerning th the Massachusetts troops had yet taken part. General Sedgwick's division, to which the 19th and 20th Mass. b from Massachusetts who fell in the Civil War. General Sedgwick writes, The 19th Mass. (Colonel Hincks) was thand his services were especially recognized by General Sedgwick. Lieuts. William H. Sutherland of the 1st and her brave officer who fell at Antietam was Maj. William D. Sedgwick of Lenox, formerly captain in the 2d Mass. the time of his death serving on the staff of General Sedgwick, his kinsman. He fell while trying to rally ass M. Whiting and Lieut. Albert A.
