James, and his scouts reported the enemy concentrating at Lynchburg from the west, while Pickett's infantry and Fitz Lee's cavalry were moving upon the same point from Richmond. The bridges over the James were destroyed, and Sheridan must either return to Winchester or attempt to rejoin Grant. Fortunately, he chose the latter course. But first he determined to effect a more absolute demolition of the railroads and canal. By hurrying quickly down the canal, and destroying it as far as Goochland, and then moving along the railroad towards Richmond, and tearing that up as close to the city as possible, he felt convinced that he could not only strike a heavy blow at the supplies of the rebel capital and army, but render useless the concentration of troops at Lynchburg. This conception was no sooner formed than acted on, and the entire command moved down the canal. we should not bestow a posthumous notice on a few pointers we have known. And first upon Carlo, a dog that belonged to Mr. Narcissus W. Miller now Clerk of Goochland county. Poor Carlo! He has now been under the sod more than thirty years, yet his master has not forgotten him to this day. He was a most gentlemanly dog, yet somehe canine world was Ludo, a large, beautiful white and black pointer, belonging to Dr. Wm. S. Scott, now of Fredericksburg, but at the time we speak of living in Goochland. Ludo was a magnificent dog in all respects, No dog of his day could find more birds, and he was fully as good at single birds as at coveys. He was not fond officient ascendancy over him to break him as he was broken. He must have taken to it naturally. They recommend first, that the Governor call the Legislature together immediately; second, that Virginia invite a conference of the Southern States; and third, that the Legislature appoint delegates "to meet their Northern brethren in conference. In Amelia county, on the 22d inst., a public meeting adopted resolutions earnestly requesting the Legislature to call a State Convention, and asking the Governor to convene the Legislature early in December. In Goochland co., on the 19th, a public meeting adopted a resolution suggesting to Gov. Letcher to call the Legislature together on the 1st of December. Other resolutions also adopted, declare that "the election of Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency is an open and official avowal by a popular majority of the North and of the nation that the past aggressions of Black Republicanism are right; and that aggressions against our rights are to be persisted in with great aggravation for the future."
