t Hilton Head, S. C.. on the evening of the twenty-first of October. 1862, and proceeding up Broad River, arrived off Pocotaligo Creek, at half-past 4 o'clock A. M. with the transport Ben Deford and I greatly felt the want of cavalry, who, in consequence of the transports having grounded in Broad River, did not arrive till nearly four P. M., and who, in the early part of the day, would, perhapsossing the Pocotaligo, Tullifiny, and Coosahatchie. These streams are all tributaries of the Broad River; and to approach them it was determined, after a careful study of the map of this peculiarly ult country for military operations, to make a landing at Mackay's Point, at the junction of the Broad and Pocotaligo Rivers, a distance of twenty-five miles from Hilton Head, where our troops could were not of trifling value.
