Bradstreet, John, 1711-1774
Military officer; born in Harbling, England.
in 1711; was lieutenant-colonel of Pepperell's regiment in the expedition against Louisburg in 1745; and in September, the same year, he was made a captain of a regular regiment.
The following year he was appointed lieutenant-governor of St. Johns, New-foundland — a sinecure place.
Braddock ordered him to accompany Shirley to Oswego, in 1755.
as his adjutant; and in 1756 he was charged with conveying supplies to Oswego.
In 1757 he was appointed captain of a company in the regiment of Royal Americans; and late in the same year he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the same regiment, and deputy quartermaster-general, with the rank of colonel.
He was quartermaster-general of Abercrombie's forces, with the rank of colonel, in the expedition against Ticonderoga in July, 1758; and in August he led an expedition which captured Fort Frontenac.

Diplomatist; born in St. Johns, Newfoundland, June 4, 1852; graduated at Olivet College, Mich., in 1878; appointed United States minister resident and consul-general to Siam, in January, 1898.
He is the author of Outlines of United States history, etc.

Roberval, Jean Francois de La Roqute, Sieur de 1500-
Colonist; born in France, about 1500; early won distinction in the army: and was authorized by the King to colonize and govern Canada.
In prosecution of his design of planting a colony in Canada Roberval sailed from France with three ships and 200 persons, and in the harbor of St. Johns, Newfoundland, met Cartier, who was on his return to Europe.
He commended the country of Canada to Roberval as rich and fruitful.
The latter commanded Cartier to return to the St. Lawrence with him, but the navigator eluded the viceroy in the night and sailed for France.
Roberval sailed up the St. Lawrence some distance above the site of Quebec, built a fort, and remained there through the winter (1542-43). In the spring he explored the country above, but appears to have abandoned the enterprise soon afterwards.
The colony was broken up, and for half a century the French made no further attempts to colonize Canada.
