I wish to offer my heartfelt thanks to the First North Carolina regiment, for the protection it rendered me; and most particularly do I feel grateful to the three gentlemen who met me on the road; one was General Hill, but I don't know the names of the others. I am a Virginian, but my heart is with the North Carolinians; I love them, and my prayers shall be for them, and, most of all, for General Hill.
