amer Merrimac sailed from Plymouth on the 29th ult., with a large cargo of ammunition for the Confederates, and the U. S. frigate Tuscarora followed her the next day from Southampton, but returned to Queenstown on the 31st. The result of the chase had not transpired. Another new steamer, supposed to be carrying stores for the Confederates, also left Liverpool about the same time for Nassau. The Bishop of Oxford had ordered prayers for the restoration of peace in America. The Prince de Joinville has written a letter to his brother, the Duc d'aumale describing the retreat of General McClellan from the York to the James river. He attributes the movement to the necessity arising from the unexpected reinforcements of Stonewall Jackson and General Beauregard, which had reached the rebels at that juncture.
