The work was mostly carried on by one Capt. J. D. Johnson, of the 16th Kentucky regiment, who is among those still at large. On several occasions this man had been absent at roll call, which puzzled the clerk considerably to account for it. At one time, soon after the count of the prisoners had been made, and the deficiency noticed, Johnson came forward and laughingly remarked that when his name was called he was rolled up in a blanket and ensconced away where no one could find him. He begged indulgence for the offence, as it was only intended to warn the clerk of the prison a little. Doubtless whenever these deficiencies occurred, the parties failing to answer were at work on their subterranean passage.
