Anthon, Charles

An American classical scholar born in New York in 1797. He was educated at Columbia College, where he became Adjunct Professor of Greek and Latin in 1820, and full Professor in 1825. He died in 1867. Dr. Anthon did a great deal towards disseminating a fuller and richer knowledge of the Greek and Latin literatures in the United States by his editions of the best known authors elaborately annotated, and was among the first of English-speaking scholars to draw largely upon the results of German research in his own work. His best known editions are those of Horace (1830), Homer, Livy , Tacitus, Caesar, and Euripides. He also wrote a number of text-books for the teaching of Greek and Latin, and was the author of a widely used Classical Dictionary, besides re-editing for American use some of Dr. William Smith's dictionaries relating to antiquities and ancient literature.
