Obŏlus
(
ὀβολός). A piece of money (Greck) originally of silver,
but in later times (after B.C. 400) of bronze. The Attic obolus was worth about three cents
American; and the Aeginetan obolus, about five cents. There were also
tetroboli, trioboli, and
dioboli; and fractional denominations,
such as the
hemiobolus, tetartimorion, etc. The Attic obolus equals 8
