ἀθλ-ητής , contr. from ἀεθλητής, οῦ, ὁ:—
A.combatant, champion; esp. in games, Pi.N.5.49, 10.51 (in form ἀεθλ-), cf. Pl.R. 410b, IG4.1508B (Epid.), etc.: of Christian martyrs, Epist.Gall. ap. Jul.454d, cf. JRS10.53.
2. as Adj., ἀ. ἵππος a race-horse, Lys.19.63, Pl.Prm.137a.
II. c. gen. rei, practised in, master of, “πολέμου” Pl.R.543b; “τῶν καλῶν ἔργων” D.25.97; βδελυρίας Theopomp. Hist.217; τῶν ἔργων (sc. τῶν πολεμικῶν) Arist.Pol.1321a26; “τῆς ἀληθινῆς λέξεως” D.H.Dem.18; “πάσης ἀρετῆς” D.S.9.1; “οἵους ἡ γῆ τοὺς ἑαυτῆς ἀ. ἀποτελεῖ” Philostr.Im.2.24.
