Caia'nus

（Γαϊανύς), or GAIA'NUS, a Greek rhetorician and sophist, was a native of Arabia and a disciple of Apsines and Gadara, and he accordingly lived in the reign of the emperors Maximus and Gordianus. He taught rhetoric at Berytus, and wrote several works, such as On Syntax (Περὶ Συντάξεως), in five books, a System of Rhetoric (Τέχνη Ῥητορική), and Declamations (Μέλεται) ; but no fragments of these works are now extant. (Suidas, s. v. Γαϊανός; Eudoc. p. 100.)

In the article on Soranus, we find: "at this present time (1848)" and this date seems to reflect the dates of works cited. 1873 - probably the printing date.
