A Presbyterian clergyman, while walking the deck of a steamer at St. John's, N. B., where secessionism had considerable footing, noticing the American flag flying from the masthead of a ship, tauntingly said to Col. Favor, “Why don't you take a slice off that flag, since you have lost a portion of your country?”
Yankee-like, the Colonel quickly replied, “Why don't you tear a leaf from your Bible, because a part of your church have fallen from grace?”
The clergyman had no more to say on that subject.
