De forest, John William, 1826-

Military officer; born in Humphreysville (now Seymour), Conn., March 31, 1826; entered the National army as captain at the beginning of the Civil War; served continuously till January, 1865; and was adjutant-general of the Veteran Reserve Corps in 1865-68. His publications include The history of the Indians of Connecticut, from the earliest-known period to 1850, etc.
