General Bragg was in front of Nashville, with his army in good form, and stronger than when the campaign began.
Gen. Kirby Smith was in undisputed possession of east Tennessee.
He had forced the evacuation of Cumberland Gap, had won the victory at Richmond, Ky., and had traversed the State of Kentucky without let or hindrance, in spite of the grand strategy of General Halleck, commander-in-chief of the armies of the United States in the Southwest, who said in a dispatch to Buell, dated Corinth, June 1, 1862: ‘Smith must abandon east Tennessee or be captured.’
On the 23d of October, General Bragg ordered Lieutenant-General Polk to proceed with his command to Murfreesboro, Tenn.
