Battery hands.

--The city police force have been steadily engaged for several days past in and turning over to the proper authorities all free negroes found within the corporate limits who are liable to employment on the defences of the city. As a general rule, this class of persons are as much bound to contribute to the defence of their homes as white men, and many of them are not only willing but anxious to do so. There are others, however, who never earn their broad unless forced to do so, and are therefore fit only for the service to which they are being assigned.
