Arrest of a supposed spy.

--James E. Carter, alias Edwards, was arrested in this city yesterday and committed to Castle Thunder on the charge of being a deserter and supposed Yankee spy. The accused was brought here on the last flag-of-truce boat from the North as an exchanged Confederate surgeon; but it has since turned out that he is no surgeon. He is a native of Henrico county, and, for some offence committed by him, has been an inmate of the Virginia penitentiary; but having divulged to our authorities a plan of escape which was on foot among the prisoners of that institution, he was discharged before the expiration of his term of imprisonment, and afterward connected himself with our army. When arrested he was stopping at the American Hotel, and had deposited in the safe there about thirteen hundred dollars.
