On that day, then, the call was manifestly for me. I came forward
and addressed you; and I will now ask your careful attention to the speech I
then made, for two reasons: first, that you may understand that I, alone among
your orators and politicians, did not desert the post of patriotism in the hour
of peril, but approved myself as one who in the midst of panic could, both in
speech and in suggestion, do what duty bade on your behalf; and secondly,
because at the cost of a few minutes of study you may gain experience which will
stand you in good stead for your policy in times to come.
