On those grounds I claim this distinction. As for my
fortifications, which you treated so satirically, and my entrenchments, I do,
and I must, judge these things worthy of gratitude and thanks; but I give them a
place far removed from my political achievements. I did not fortify Athens with masonry and brickwork: they are
not the works on which I chiefly pride myself. Regard my fortifications as you
ought, and you will find armies and cities and outposts, seaports and ships and
horses, and a multitude ready to fight for their defence.
