They have also to adjudicate cases when a man does not repair his ship or builds something on public property, and in addition to settle disputes every year for chorus leaders at the Dionysia, Thargelia, Panathenaea, Promethia, and Hephaestia.Four hundred trierarchs are appointed every year,1 and disputes have to be settled for any of these who wish. Moreover, magistrates have to be approved and their disputes settled, orphans approved and prisoners' guards appointed. And these things happen every year.
1 From the numbers of ships in Thuc. 2. 13. 8 and Aristoph. Acharn. 545 one would expect 300 trierarchs. Our manuscripts of Andocides 3.9 mention 400 ships, but it is clear from Aeschines' plagiarism (2.175) of Andocides that the original reading was 300. Perhaps in pseudo-Xenophon too.
