Ηη , ἦτα (q.v.), τό, indecl., eighth (later seventh) letter of the Gr. alphabet; as numeral ή,= ὀκτώ and ὄγδοος, but ἡνυμ̓,= 8,000. In most local alphabets of v B.C. and earlier it represents
A.h, in others (incl. the Ion.= later general Gr. alphabet) one of the long ē sounds (cf. βῆ βῆ). Described by E.Fr.382.5, Agatho 4.2.
